Kava produces relaxation, anxiolysis, muscle relaxation, and mild euphoria with maintained cognitive clarity — distinct from alcohol's cognitive blunting. Immediate mouth/lip numbness from kavalactones is the quality indicator. Many first-timers feel nothing for the first 2–5 sessions ("reverse tolerance") before effects kick in. Onset 20–45 min; peak 60–90 min.
Kava shots are pre-measured liquid kava extracts containing 150–400mg kavalactones. They work within 15–30 minutes — faster than traditional kava. Mouth numbness is the reliable quality indicator. Safe for occasional use with noble kava root; avoid combining with alcohol or acetaminophen. Effects last 2–3 hours.
Kanna has a 2,000-year use history with no documented deaths attributed to it alone. Clinical trials (2013, 2014) found no serious adverse events at 25mg. Primary risk: serotonin syndrome when combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, or MAOIs. Raw powder is less predictable than standardized extract. Low risk for healthy adults not on serotonergic medications.
The San people of southern Africa have used kanna for at least 2,000 years for hunger suppression, pain management, and mood elevation during hunts and social gatherings. Earliest European record: Dutch explorer Jan van Riebeeck in 1662. Traditional fermentation processing was pharmacologically significant — it shifts alkaloid ratios, changing the plant's effect profile.
Kanna reduces social anxiety via serotonin reuptake inhibition (mesembrine) and PDE4-mediated amygdala desensitization. A 2014 RCT found 25mg standardized extract directly reduced amygdala threat-response. Users report anxiety reduction without sedation or cognitive blunting — meaningfully different from alcohol. Avoid combining with SSRIs/MAOIs.
Kanna improves focus through PDE4 inhibition (elevating neuronal cAMP), the same mechanism as pharmaceutical nootropic rolipram. A 2013 RCT found 25mg standardized extract improved executive function and cognitive flexibility. Best for anxiety-driven focus issues — reduces anxiety and improves cognition simultaneously. Avoid combining with SSRIs.
Best for beginners: green vein kratom at 2–3g. Start with a kratom shot for pre-measured dosing, or weigh powder with a digital scale (don't measure by teaspoon). Wait 90 minutes before assessing. First use is often subtler than subsequent sessions. Limit to 3–4x per week to avoid rapid tolerance.
Kratom and coffee are botanical family relatives (Rubiaceae) — the resemblance is taxonomically real. Both produce stimulant effects but through completely different mechanisms. Kratom tea is traditional in Southeast Asia, where it was used like a work stimulant by laborers. Kratom-caffeine combination amplifies stimulant effects but also increases nausea risk.
Kratom tolerance builds via opioid receptor downregulation, typically within 2–4 weeks of daily use. Reset with 7–14 day abstinence; taper first to reduce withdrawal. Strain rotation (daily alternation) slows tolerance. 3-on/2-off use schedule is the best prevention strategy for long-term users.
