Kratom Strains Explained: Red, White, Green, and Yellow

Kratom is sold by "strain" — typically Red Vein, White Vein, Green Vein, and Yellow (or Gold) — and by claimed origin (Maeng Da, Bali, Borneo, Malay, Thai, etc.). The strain naming system is based primarily on the vein color of the leaf at harvest and the processing method used after harvest, not on fundamentally different plant genetics. Despite the loose nomenclature, the color classification does predict the expected effect profile reasonably well, making it useful even if it's not botanically rigorous.

What is the difference between red, white, and green kratom?

Red Vein Kratom: Harvested from mature leaves with higher mitragynine-to-7-OH-mitragynine ratios. Effect profile: sedating, analgesic, relaxing. Most commonly used for pain relief, stress, and sleep support. Best for evening use. White Vein Kratom: Harvested earlier, from younger leaves. Higher mitragynine, different alkaloid ratios. Effect profile: stimulating, energizing, mood-elevating. Used for energy, focus, and mood. Best for daytime use. Green Vein Kratom: Middle harvest, balanced alkaloid profile. Effect: moderate energy with mild relaxation — often described as the most versatile strain for social situations or all-day use.

What is Yellow or Gold kratom?

Yellow (or Gold) kratom is a processing variation, not a different leaf vein color. It's typically produced by fermenting or extended-drying white or green vein leaves, which alters the alkaloid profile through oxidation. The effect profile is generally described as smoother, more balanced, and more mellow than standard white vein but more uplifting than red. Yellow Borneo and Yellow Maeng Da are common examples. Standardization is lower for yellow strains than red/white/green.

Does kratom strain origin (Bali, Maeng Da, etc.) matter?

Origin names (Bali, Borneo, Thai, Maeng Da) were historically meaningful but are now largely marketing terms — most kratom is grown in the same Indonesian regions regardless of label. Maeng Da ("pimp grade" in Thai) was originally a high-potency selection but now refers to a general quality tier claim rather than a specific cultivar. Focus on the color classification and third-party COA for alkaloid content rather than origin names. Find lab-tested kratom by strain at Elevated Haze.
